How to make a hand drum

Emily Chin

In Rwanda, Africa, kids have fun using these hand drums to create percussion sounds. Try making one at home for hours of noisy fun!
What you will need:

  • Yarn
  • Beads
  • Decorative tape
  • Sticky tape
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Cardboard cereal box
  • Single hole punch

What to do:

  1. Cut out the long skinny side of the box and cut it in half length ways
  2. Sticky tape the ends to create a circular ring
  3. Trace around the circle on the cardboard twice and cut out the circles
  4. Punch 3 holes on the ring: 2 on the sides and 1 on the bottom
  5. Feed the yarn into the 2 holes on the sides and sticky tape down
  6. Decorate the circles with the decorative tape
  7. Sticky tape the circles to each side of the ring
  8. Feed 4 beads onto each side of the yarn and tie a knot on the ends so they don’t fall off Make sure the beads reach the middle of the drum
  9. Stick a pencil through the third hole as a handle
  10. Twist the drum in your hands so the beads hit the drum and make lots of noise!
