How to Spot Difficulties in Early Learning

Difficulties in early learning often go unnoticed. But if you know what to look for, parents can be alerted and extra support provided to the child. It’s therefore best to always be on the lookout for learning difficulties as educators just to be on the safe side. Children with learning difficulties may require additional help or resources to help them retain information. Alternative education routes may also be necessary, so being aware of any early learning difficulties as soon as possible is key. Below are some areas where learning difficulties may present themselves in children.

Gross Motor Skills

These skills are controlled by large muscle groups that are used during movement and action. Gross motor skills are involved with many tasks we take for granted such as sitting up, walking, running, kicking a ball, throwing and lifting. If a child is having difficulty with any of these activities, there may be issues with their muscle development, balance or coordination. Gross motor skills also influence abilities in writing, drawing and watching things.

Fine Motor Skills

More detailed activities like writing, tying laces, or fastening a button or zip are part of the fine motor skill set. If these things are a problem for a child, they’ll most likely have issues with self-grooming tasks such as washing, dressing, eating or brushing their teeth. It’s usually quite easy to spot these skill deficiencies once you know what you’re looking for.

Cognitive Skills

These skills involve acts such as thinking, social interactions and emotional processing. It’s worth bearing in mind that a child with learning difficulties might at first appear shy. However, if they repeatedly show a lack of cognitive skills, there could be a learning difficulty present.

Not all the above signs definitely mean that a child has a problem. Kids naturally grow and develop at different rates, and that’s to be expected. However, there’s no harm in communicating openly and honestly with the child’s parents if you notice anything unusual in their development.
